PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — Sophomore Jeff Gelinas struck out six and gave up two earned runs to lead the Maine Black Bears to a 9-2 baseball victory over Mount St. Mary’s Tuesday.

Maine lost its second game of the day, 8-7 to Ball State.

Gelinas, a 6-foot-4 righthander from Thornton Academy in Saco, gave up three walks and received offensive support from Danny Diaz who singled twice and drove in three runs.

Brian Doran chipped in with a two-run double and Shane Bussey added an RBI single.

In the second game, Ball State’s two runs in the eighth inning, one unearned, gave it the winning edge. Matt Epper’s single to center plated Alex Maloney and the second run scored on an error by shortstop Bussey.

Maine pushed across two runs in the ninth on Sam Balzano’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Brett Chappell.

Maine starter Chris Piteo (0-1), a sophomore righthander, was reached for six runs in and seven hits in 3 ⅓ innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Balzano and Diaz each recorded three hits for the Black Bears. Bussey contributed two hits and drove in two runs.

Maine (3-9) returns to action with a 6 p.m. Wednesday contest against Bethune-Cookman. Ball State is now 6-5 and Mount St. Mary’s is 3-3.

Softball

South Florida 7, Maine 0

At Tampa, Florida, South Florida used a six-run third-inning and held the Black Bears to just one hit to earn the victory.

Sam Greiner (4-1) pitched five innings, gave up only one and two walks while striking out four to lead South Florida. Karla Claudio then came on to finish with two scoreless innings, striking out five.

Maine’s Alexis Bogdanovich (3-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs and 10 hits over five innings. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out four.

Lee Ann Spivey sparked South Florida (11-7) with home run and four RBIs. Anna Devine, Lauren Evans and Mia Fung each chipped in with two hits.

Rachel Carlson had the only hit for Maine (4-6).

Men’s Basketball

Georgetown 60, Butler 54

At Indianapolis, Indianapolis native D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 16 points, including two key free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining, to lift Georgetown to a 60-54 victory against 21st-ranked Butler on Tuesday night in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

With the Hoyas leading 56-54, Smith-Rivera rebounded a missed free throw by teammate Joshua Smith and was fouled. The guard then made the two free throws, and after a Butler turnover, guard Isaac Copeland iced it with two more free throws with 4.8 seconds left.

Butler, which was only 10 of 22 from the line, got 15 points and 16 rebounds from forward Kameron Woods, and guard Alex Barlow added 13.

Georgetown improved to 19-9, 11-6 in the Big East, and swept a two-game series with Butler. The Bulldogs fell to 21-9, 11-6.

Bulldogs’ forward Andrew Chrabascz made a 3-pointer at 3:01 to pull the Bulldogs within 54-52, but Smith-Rivera’s jumper with 1:55 to go made it 56-52. Butler got to within 56-54 on Barlow’s layup with 56 seconds remaining.

Guard Aaron Bowen’s 3-pointer from the left wing gave Georgetown a 52-47 lead with 4:13 left, only 27 seconds after Chrabascz missed two free throws that would have tied the game at 49.

The Hoyas used a 19-4 run from the 8:50 mark until 1:12 remained in the first half to erase a 17-11 deficit and create a 30-21 lead. Chrabascz sank a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to pull the Bulldogs to within 30-24 at halftime.

Freshman guard Tre Campbell had eight points and Smith-Rivera had five during Georgetown’s 19-4 blitz.

Butler, which led throughout most of the first 11 minutes, scored only seven points during the half’s final 9:46 — a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw.

Guard Jabril Trawick scored the Hoyas’ first nine points and led his team in scoring during the first 20 minutes. Woods had seven points and seven rebounds to lead Butler’s first half production.

The Bulldogs made only 9 of 27 first-half shots (33.3 percent), including 0 of 4 from leading scorer, guard Kellen Dunham.

Georgetown was 12 of 21 from the field (57.1 percent). Butler outrebounded the Hoyas 17-11 during the opening 20 minutes but also was only 2 of 7 from the free throw line.
