PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Secretary of State’s Office has issued a warning to businesses not to hand over information to an entity operating under the name Maine Council for Corporations.

State officials said numerous companies have recently received mailings from the entity, which typically lists an address as 126 Western Ave., #338 in Augusta, which is a P.O. Box. That same box previously sent out similar fraudulent solicitations under the name “Corporate Records Service.”

A search of corporate records in Maine and other states did not identify any entity operating under the name Maine Council for Corporations or Corporate Records Service.

The secretary of state’s office said in a news release that the solicitations arrive with an “official-looking” document that is titled “2015 — Annual Records Solicitation Form.”

The company offers to complete annual reports for businesses or nonprofit groups if they fill out the form and pay $125, which the secretary of state’s office said is a scam.

Companies are to file annual reports with the state by June 1, and the secretary of state’s office urged any business owner with questions to call 624-7752.
