BANGOR, Maine — Recent shared information on social media led Bangor police to spend multiple hours Thursday morning canvassing every business at the busy Broadway Shopping Center, according to Sgt. Tim Cotton.

Cotton said the visit’s intention was to check on recently shared information concerning a person harassing customers at the retail area.

Bangor police said in a post on their Facebook page last week no such harassments had happened in that area.

“The reason for our visit today was to allay any concerns of patrons or business owners and employees at the shopping center,” Cotton said in a statement. “Rest assured, after our visit today, we have confirmed through face to face contact that the stories that have been running rampant in recent weeks have very little basis in fact.”

Cotton is assuring the public that the Broadway shopping center and surrounding businesses are safe places to visit, and anyone who observes suspicious behavior should contact Bangor police at 947-7384.
