WINTER HAVEN, Florida — The Husson University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and held on to post a 6-4 win over Suffolk Monday.

Husson is now 1-2 and Suffolk is 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, Kyle Bishop knocked in a pair of runs on a double and Julien Boone and Christian Corneil each had run-scoring triples that gave Husson a 6-1 lead.

Suffolk came back to score a run in the eighth and two in the ninth, but the Eagles held on for the win.

Corneil went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Ryan Rebar and J.T. Whitten each added a hit and RBI.

Dan Whitney pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run and six hits to get the win.

Husson continues play Tuesday with a pair of contests against Rhode Island College.

Husson splits twinbill

At Winter Haven, Florida, Husson split a doubleheader, beating Defiance 2-1 and falling to Simpson 4-2.

Husson is now 2-2, Defiance is 1-2 and Simpson is 14-0.

In the first game against Defiance, Husson’s Deb Colpitts pitched seven innings scattering seven hits and allowing just one run to give the Eagles of Bangor the win.

Lyndsay Merrill doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Kayla Merrill to break a 1-1 tie.

Husson tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Colpitts doubled home Lyndsay Merrill after Defiance took the lead in the top of the first.

Lyndsay Merrill and Colpitts each went 2 for 3 with a RBI while Haley Spiers went 2 for 2.

In the second game, Colpitts knocked in a pair of runs with a first-inning double, but Simpson was able to tie the game in the second inning.

Abbie VanFleet had a two-run triple in the bottom of the third that proved to be the difference for Simpson.

Kayla Merrill took the loss as she pitched five innings and gave up four earned runs. Kayla Merrill, Lyndsay Merrill and Allie Hill each had two hits for Husson.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan and St. Scholastica.
