GRAY, Maine — Bright sunshine and mild temperatures Wednesday brought visions of spring throughout the state as both Bangor and Portland enjoyed temperatures above 40 degrees.
But don’t put the shovels and snowblowers away just yet.
A storm system heading for the Northeast has potential to bring significant snowfall to Maine over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
“We’re looking at at least a chance for snow Saturday into Sunday,” said Chris Legro, a forecaster at the weather service’s Gray office.
With high temperatures Saturday expected to be in the low to mid-30s, the potential for mixed precipitation is there as well.
Legro said any snow that falls will be of the wetter variety as opposed to the fluffy, powdery, blowing snow that fell throughout February.
“It’s still pretty far out so we could see things change between now and [this weekend],” Legro said. “Just how much falls as snow, that is the question.”
Forecasters aren’t concerned with flooding potential out of this system, Legro pointed out, as temperatures would be too chilly to create flood risks.
