AUGUSTA, Maine — The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday afternoon Freeman Taylor Jr., 41, of Augusta was mistakenly released from the Kennebec County Jail due to a clerical error. The jail says they take responsibility for the mistake.
Taylor was sentenced Thursday morning on drug charges. He was sentenced to 48 months in prison. Officials said normally someone who gets sentenced to that much time would go directly to the state prison.
Taylor, however, was given a stay that allowed him to stay at the jail until March 17, and then he would be taken to the state prison.
Officials say the stay is unusual. They called it an anomaly that wasn’t caught by the jail staff in the normal paperwork.
Taylor was described as 5’10,” about 200 pounds, clean shaven with very short salt and pepper hair. He was last seen wearing a dark gray sweatshirt with an ace of spades on the front, and light blue jeans.
Officials said Taylor may have changed his clothes since being released.
Police are actively searching for Taylor in Greater Augusta.
