SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Two teens face attempted murder charges after one man was shot and another was stabbed in South Portland during a drug deal Wednesday night, police said.
Essa Sayed, 18, of South Portland and Zachary Swain, 18, of Cape Elizabeth are being held at the Cumberland County Jail on attempted murder and aggravated assault charges after their arrests Thursday.
South Portland police said the incident happened in a parking lot at the Wainwright Sports Complex off Highland Avenue in South Portland. An 18-year-old man from South Portland was stabbed and remains hospitalized, and an 19-year-old man from South Portland was shot. He was treated and released. The two victims drove themselves to Mercy Hospital for treatment.
Police executed three search warrants based on leads and interviews before arresting Sayed and Strain. The suspects and victims were completing a deal for a “relatively small quantity of marijuana.”
Sayed and Strain may face additional charges. Portland and Cape Elizabeth police assisted South Portland police with the investigation.
