Beach to Beacon 10K registration closes in record time
PORTLAND, Maine — Prospective Beach to Beacon 10K runners proved Friday morning they are just as quick with their thumbs as they are with their legs.
General registration for the August 1 race in Cape Elizabeth, which is capped at 4,000 entrants, sold out in a record 4 minutes, 15 seconds on Friday, according to the race’s website.
General registration closed in 4 minutes, 30 seconds last year.
Approximately 600 Cape Elizabeth residents filled up their allotted spots on Thursday, and the remainder of the general public wishing to enter the race must enter a lottery, of which 1,950 spots will be awarded a bib number.
The lottery drawing is on tap for March 24 and each lottery applicant will be charged a non-refundable fee of $5.
The remainder of the field is filled by elite runners from across the country and the world, “legacy runners” who have participated in every Beach to Beacon, and charitable organizations.
The race was founded in 1998 by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson of Freeport.
RB Bush meets with Patriots
Running back Reggie Bush met with the New England Patriots on Friday.
Bush was released by the Detroit Lions on Feb. 25 and had visited the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week. A potential reunion with his original team, the New Orleans Saints, seemed to be nixed when the Saints agreed to a deal with former Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller on Friday.
The Patriots are looking for a replacement for Shane Vereen, who signed with the New York Giants. The Patriots also hosted wide receiver Percy Harvin this week.
Bush, 30, played in just 11 games in 2014, gaining 530 yards from scrimmage.
The previous year — his first in Detroit after signing a four-year, $16 million deal — he rushed for 1,006 yards and four touchdowns while catching 54 passes for 506 yards and three TDs.
Wizards’ Seraphin fined for foul
Washington Wizards center Kevin Seraphin was fined $15,000 on Friday after he made excessive contact and pulled Memphis Grizzlies forward Jon Leuer to the floor on a dunk attempt during a game Thursday night.
Seraphin was called for a flagrant foul-2 and ejected with 22 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Wizards’ 107-87 victory over the Grizzlies at the Verizon Center.
The Wizards were leading by 23 points when Seraphin committed the foul as Leuer was dunking at the end of a fast break. It appeared that Seraphin hit Leuer on the head and then pulled him down by an arm.
The referees originally ruled the foul a flagrant-1 but changed the call to flagrant-2, which carries an automatic ejection, after reviewing the play.
Bills, WR Harvin agree to one-year deal
The Buffalo Bills and wide receiver Percy Harvin reportedly agreed to terms of a one-year contract on Friday.
The 49ers reportedly made a late push to sign him, but Harvin chose the Bills’ $6 million offer, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
The Bills will be Harvin’s fourth team in three years after the New York Jets released him Tuesday rather than pay his $10.5 million salary for 2015.
Harvin, 26, was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings but was traded twice in the past three years.
