LAKE WALES, Florida — The University of Maine-Farmington baseball team rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to beat Fredonia State 4-3 Monday.
UMF is now 6-0 and is off to its hottest start in 24 years. UMF head coach Chris Bessey was a player on the 1991 team when the team went 6-0 and won nine of its first 10 games.
Jimmy Parks slammed a two-run double to right in the eighth to rally the Beavers. He finished with three RBIs.
Ben Keene chipped in with two singles for UMF while Mark Leahy added two and scored three runs. Trevor Hisler added a single and an RBI.
Nick Cartmell pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win and Tom Grady came on to record the save with two hitless innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Vincent Sherman and Ryan Carmody each recorded two singles for Fredonia (2-4).
USM 7, Rowan 7
At Winter Haven, Florida, junior right-hander Shyler Scates pitched eight strong innings to earn his second win of the season as the eighth-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies (6-2) defeated 23rd-ranked Rowan University (3-4) at Chain O’ Lakes Field.
Scates allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out four over eight innings.
Senior Brendon Joyce led the Huskies’ 14-hit offense with three hits and two RBIs. Sophomore Paul McDonough had a double and his third home run of the season. Junior Sam Dexter and rookies Anthony Capuano and Thomas Zarro had a pair of hits.
Sophomore Jason Clapper had a double, a single and scored twice for the Profs.
