MACHIAS, Maine — Blowing and drifting snow caused a section of Route 1 to be closed for a few hours Wednesday.
A county dispatcher said Route 1 between Machias and Whitneyville was closed at about 9 a.m. and crews were working to reopen it.
The road remained closed until about 12:30 p.m., when one lane was opened, she said.
Whiteout conditions were persistent and crews were “struggling” to keep the road open, the dispatcher said.
“It’s just an awful lot of drifting past the blueberry fields,” she said.
By 2:45 p.m., both lanes were open and the sun was out.
During the closure of Route 1, traffic was rerouted to Route 1A, which also was reduced to one lane, she said.
