THOMASTON, Maine — Fire Chief Mike Leo said crews did a “heck of a job” to put out a fire that threatened a large home in the village on Sunday night.
The fire caused an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 in damage but the home will be able to be lived in again as soon as the house is cleaned from the smoke, Leo said Monday.
The fire started in a dryer on the second floor of the captain-style, two-and-a-half story house at 92 Gleason St., the chief said. The fire extended into the wall in the rear of the dryer and then spread into the attic.
A resident called the fire department when the smoke was detected shortly after 8 p.m. There was also fire damage to the second floor laundry room. There were no injuries.
The property is owned by Noreen Mellor, according to town tax records. The property is assessed at nearly $250,000.
Thomaston called in Rockland and South Thomaston, Leo said, because of the size of the house and the potential for the fire to spread. He said the mutual aid system worked perfectly.
Crews were there for several hours, largely with cleanup. The fire was knocked down in the first 25 minutes, he said.
