WHITEFIELD, Maine — A fire at Whitefield Elementary School Friday afternoon led officials to evacuate students, but the blaze was extinguished a short time later.
RSU 12 Superintendent Howard Tuttle said Friday afternoon firefighters sent students home for precautionary reasons.
According to Tuttle, a light fixture in the school’s gymnasium was the likely cause of the fire, which caused minimal damage, he said.
A Lincoln County Communications dispatcher confirmed the fire at about 10:15 a.m. and confirmed about 10 minutes later that the fire was out.
Students were evacuated starting at about 11:15 a.m., Tuttle said.
Whitefield Elementary School is a K-8 school that houses 180 students. No students or teachers were injured.
