SACO, Maine — Thousands of people put their best foot forward in order to get one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.
Thousands of walkers and runners laced up their shoes for the annual Mary’s Walk and Kerrymen 5K Sunday in Saco and CBS 13’s very own Kim Block was there to MC the event.
After Mary Kerry Libby died from cancer, her husband, Gene, put the walk together in her name.
Since Mary’s Walk started 17 years ago it has raised more than $2 million for cancer prevention and research.
Libby says he’s proud of what everyone has helped to accomplish so far.
“This would be a very big surprise to her that her memory has created such a lasting legacy,” Libby said.
Cancer survivor Doug Bennett’s team raised more than $13,000 this year for the event.
“It means we’re going to find a cure someday,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time. I know it is.”
