Bulls’ Rose resumes contact practice

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose participated in a full-contact practice Monday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in February.

“He was a little winded, but we expected that,” coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. “Overall I thought it was good.”

Rose had a meniscectomy on his right knee Feb. 27 and was expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Last week, Rose said his knee was pain-free and he remained optimistic about returning before the playoffs.

Rose is averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists in 46 games this season.

Rockets point guard out for season

Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverley will have surgery on his left wrist and miss the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old guard will undergo surgery Tuesday, ESPN.com reported.

Beverley suffered torn ligaments in the wrist March 23 in a victory over the Indiana Pacers. He saw a doctor in Houston last Wednesday and sought a second opinion before deciding on surgery Monday.

In his third year with the Rockets, Beverley is averaging 10.1 points and 3.4 assists per game this season.

Jason Terry, 37, will step in as the starter and Pablo Prigioni will back up Terry.

Texas talking to VCU coach Smart

Texas is talking to Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart about its coaching vacancy, sources told CBS Sports on Monday.

Texas is seeking to replace Rick Barnes, who was fired last weekend after 17 seasons.

Smart, who took over at VCU in 2009, has led the Rams to the NCAA Tournament for five straight years, including a Final Four in 2011.

The 37-year-old has declined overtures from several schools, including Illinois, Marquette, Maryland, North Carolina State, UCLA and Wake Forest.

Packers reach deal with DT Guion

The Green Bay Packers reached agreement on a one-year deal to keep defensive tackle Letroy Guion, ESPN.com reported Monday.

According to the report, details of the contract were finalized Monday morning and the free agent Guion is expected to sign by Tuesday.

The deal comes three days after he visited the Seattle Seahawks.

Guion, 27, was arrested on Feb. 3 in his hometown of Starke, Fla., for felony possession of marijuana and a firearm. His legal case was eventually resolved in conjunction with a no contest plea and a $5,000 fine. Guion still could face disciplinary action from the NFL.

Guion started every game for the Packers last season, posting career highs in tackles (32) and sacks (3.5).

Lightning D Garrison out 3-4 weeks

The Tampa Bay Lightning lost defenseman Jason Garrison for 3-4 weeks and could be without three others for at least a game, coach Jon Cooper said Monday.

Defenseman Andrej Sustr will miss 1-2 weeks and center Tyler Johnson will not play Monday against the Montreal Canadiens, Cooper said. All three have upper-body injuries suffered in Tampa Bay’s 4-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Center Cedric Paquette also was injured in that game and is a game-time decision Monday.
