ROCKLAND, Maine — Rockland firefighters were battling a house fire Wednesday afternoon.

The fire apparently started in a breezeway between the house and garage at 21 Maverick St., according to Fire Chief Adam Miceli.

The home is owned by Alfred Collier and Jeanne Davis of Santa Monica, California, according to city assessment records. The home was being rented, the chief said, but the tenants were not at home when a neighbor called in the fire at about 2 p.m., the chief said.

An investigator with the state fire marshal’s office will be assisting in determining the cause of the fire, Miceli said.

The roof of the garage and the breezeway were heavily damaged and the fire extended into the mud room of the house, the chief said. He said the house can be lived in once the fire investigator completes his investigation and makes sure the electrical system is safe.
