BANGOR, Maine — Jordan Carter blasted a solo home run in the second inning and added a two-run double in the fifth to propel the Husson University Eagles to a 4-3 North Atlantic Conference baseball victory over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday at the Winkin Complex.
Husson won the second game 5-2 in eight innings for a twinbill sweep and improved to 12-7 overall and 8-0 in the NAC while UMF slipped to 8-4 and 2-4.
In the first game, Husson scored an unearned run in the first inning, but UMF answered with two in the second on Chad Snowman’s sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Jimmy Parks. UMF added a run when Trever Hisler hit a run-producing single.
Dan Whitney earned the win for the Eagles as he improved to 3-0 after scattering seven hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out five.
In the second game, Husson rallied for three runs in the eighth to earn the win with Zach Sugar singling in the game-winning run. Andrew Curran added an RBI triple that scored Ryan Rebar and Brandon Gendreau singled in Curran.
The Beavers scored two runs in the third when Jimmie Neal’s triple to right center plated Ben Keene. Neal then scored on a wild pitch.
Curran, Sugar and Christian Corneil each had two hits for Husson.
Robert Graff (2-0) recorded the win for Husson as he gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out five. Corey Mongiat came on to earn the save with a scoreless eighth.
Valley Forge sweeps UMPI
At Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Matthew Buckery tripled, singled twice and drove in two runs to lead the University of Valley Forge Patriots to a 5-2 victory over the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Patriots won the second game 7-5 to earn the sweep.
Jeffrey Thrappas earned the game-one win for the Patriots (3-13) by scattering seven hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out four.
Brady Rowe doubled twice and singled to lead the Owls (3-6). Adam Begos chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Saul Nunez (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up six hits and four runs in five innings, but struck out eight.
Jared Boothman sparked the Patriots in the second game with two doubles, a single and RBI.
Begos and Tommy Collins each singled twice, Nunez doubled and Brady Rowe drove in two runs for UMPI.
Men’s Lacrosse
NEC 24, UM-Farmington 2
At Waterville, Matt Richard record seven goals and two assists to help New England College roll by the University of Maine-Farmington.
Conor Abbatessa and Skyler Saunders each added three goals for NEC (4-4).
Nathan Chase and David Grainger each scored a goal for UMF (0-8) and Joseph Maldonado made 14 saves.
Women’s Lacrosse
USM 22, Maine Maritime 6
At Gorham, junior Anh Nguyen scored a career-high seven points as the University of Southern Maine rolled past Maine Maritime Academy.
USM is now 2-7 and MMA is 1-6.
Nguyen scored three goals and dished out four assists for her seven points. Classmate Sarah Pelligrinelli and senior Nicole LaPlante complemented Nguyen scoring four goals apiece.
Junior Rachael Redles paced the Mariners with three goals. Senior Taylor O’Malley scored twice, and sophomore Briana Obshatkin had one goal. Sophomore goalie Ashlee Knight stopped 10 shots.
