AUGUSTA, Maine — Five people were burned out of their homes after a three-story apartment building went up in flames in Augusta. It happened around 7:20 p.m. Friday.
Firefighters say the blaze already was well underway when they arrived, and they had to concentrate on containing the flames to the one building at 15 State St.
A section of at least one other building caught fire briefly before firefighters put it out. The fire chief said it was a fast moving fire. All five people who lived at the building were home and made it out. The Red Cross is putting them up at a local hotel.
Several other apartment buildings in the area were evacuated as a precaution. Seven agencies helped the Augusta fire department with this fire.
