WOODLAND,Maine —- A felon on bail for a drug trafficking charge was arrested late Sunday evening on multiple new charges after he allegedly assaulted a woman at a home in Woodland and then drove away under the influence of alcohol.

Deputies with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for help at a home on Church Street Sunday evening after the caller reported that a man and woman were fighting at the residence, Sheriff Darrell Crandall said Wednesday

By the time deputies arrived, the man had left.

The officers conducted interviews and determined that 36-year-old George Hallyburton had assaulted a woman at the home, Crandall said. Deputies searched the area but could not locate him.

A short time later deputies were called back to the home after the man had returned and the couple was fighting again, the sheriff reported. When they got there this time, deputies found Hallyburton driving into a nearby driveway, in his sister’s vehicle. Hallyburton was arrested and charged with domestic assault, operating under the influence and violation of conditions of release.

Hallyburton was on bail at the time of this arrest for a felony drug trafficking charge. He had previously failed to appear in court on that drug charge and was arrested earlier this year in North Carolina as a fugitive from justice.

Hallyburton fought extradition and a governor’s warrant was obtained to compel his return.

In February, deputies flew to North Carolina and brought Hallyburton back to Maine to face the drug charges. He was granted bail again on March 13.
