MEXICO, Maine — Police have been found justifiable in using deadly force against a man during a standoff in Oxford County last summer.
The Office of the Attorney General has determined that the officers involved in the shooting of Steven Piirainen, 52, of South Paris, acted in self-defense.
The officers involved were State Trooper Paul Casey and Mexico Reserve Officer Dean Benson.
On Aug. 17 of last year, Piirainen stole a pickup truck in Paris and led police on a pursuit to a convenience store in Mexico, and exchanged gunfire with the two officers in a standoff.
Piirainen was found dead inside the pickup. No officers were injured in the incident.
