BANGOR – Peggy Gene Michie, 86, died surrounded by her family on Sunday April 12, 2015, in Bangor, Maine.
Peggy was born June 20, 1928, in Knoxville, Tennessee, daughter of Cass and Katharine Williams Timmons. At the age of 15, Peggy graduated valedictorian of her high school class in Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from the University of Louisville in 1947 with a B.S. in biology and a minor in chemistry. She enrolled in a nursing program at Louisville General Hospital, and later joined the United States Navy Nurse Corps. While working at Chelsea Naval Hospital, Massachusetts, she met the love of her life, Philip Michie. After leaving the Navy, she continued in nursing until retiring in 1991.
Peggy was a loving mother and grandmother who always looked forward to time with family. She worked crossword puzzles daily with friends, read voraciously, and never shied away from debating politics. Peggy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she often volunteered at polling sites.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Brian) Caine of Bar Harbor and their children Liam and Allison; her son, John (Lela) Michie of Levant and their children Alyssa, Erin (Richard) Otis, and Katie; five great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Sherry Woodward of Nashville, Tennessee. Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Philip; an infant daughter, Marie Constance; daughter, Laurie; and brothers, Thomas and Cass.
Peggy’s family will have a private graveside memorial at a later date in Cherryfield. Donations in her memory may be made to Down East Community Hospital.
