James sits out Cavs’ final regular-season game

The Cleveland Cavaliers rested LeBron James for their regular-season finale against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night in Cleveland.

James missed a second straight game after sitting out Sunday in Boston. Coach David Blatt said he consulted with James on Tuesday before making the decision to keep him out of the final game.

Blatt planned to play all of the other Cavs regulars, but the Wizards were keeping John Wall, Bradley Beal, Nene and Paul Pierce on the bench to rest for a first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors or the Chicago Bulls.

The Cavs, who had already clinched the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, open the playoffs this weekend against the Celtics.

Duke freshman Jones to enter NBA draft

Duke freshman guard Tyus Jones, the Most Outstanding Player during the Final Four, will enter the NBA draft.

Jones and teammates Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow all are entering the draft after just one season at Duke, coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Jones, Okafor and Winslow join Corey Maggette (1999), Luol Deng (2004), Kyrie Irving (2011), Austin Rivers (2012) and Jabari Parker (2014) as Duke freshmen to enter the draft.

Arkansas swingman Michael Qualls and North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey are also entering the draft.

Veteran offensive lineman to retire

Veteran offensive lineman Daryn Colledge will retire, his agency announced Wednesday.

Colledge, 33, came into the NFL as a second-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and played for the Packers (2006-10), the Arizona Cardinals (2011-13) and the Dolphins. He started 122 consecutive games and won a Super Bowl with the Packers.

He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins last season and started 13 games.

Colledge, a licensed pilot who owns a wine label with two former Green Bay teammates, is moving to Italy for a year with his family, according to The NOVO Agency.

Packers add QB Blanchard

The Green Bay Packers signed quarterback Matt Blanchard on Wednesday.

Blanchard, a three-time national champion at Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater, had spent the past three seasons with the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers.

In 2012, the quarterback was on the Bears’ practice squad. In 2013, he was on the Panthers’ practice squad, and last year the Panthers stashed him on injured reserve with a concussion.

Blanchard sits behind Aaron Rodgers and Scott Tolzien on the Packers’ depth chart.

EditorsNote: Updates fourth graph Lions trade DE Johnson to Bucs

The Detroit Lions traded restricted free agent George Johnson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday as the teams settled their differences on the defensive end’s offer sheet.

The Lions will receive a fifth-round pick (No. 168 overall from New England) in the upcoming draft and the Buccaneers will get a seventh-round pick (No. 231 overall from Baltimore).

On Monday, the Lions contested the terms of an offer sheet restricted Johnson signed with the Bucs last week.

The Lions, who were supposed to decide whether to match by Monday, lodged a complaint with the NFL over the three-year, $9 million contract. Johnson’s contract will keep him with the Bucs through the 2017 season.
