Old Town Police Capt. Kyle Smart announced recently that he will retire July 3.
Smart began working at Old Town Police Department as a reserve officer in 1983. He was hired as a full-time emergency dispatcher in October 1984. In February 1987, he was hired as a patrol officer and attended the 57th Municipal County Basic Police Academy.
During his career at the department, Smart served as DARE officer, sergeant, lieutenant and as captain for the last several years.
During the more than 30 years at the police department, Smart has worked with dozens of officers and civilian personnel. Several of the current officers weren’t even born when Smart started his career in Old Town.
Smart said that as a lifelong resident of Old Town, he has many ties to the community and is proud to have been able to serve the citizens of Old Town for this long. “I have no regrets in my career choice and I’m happy I’ve been able to keep up for this long,” he said,
Unfortunately, Smart has been slowed by an injury and is ending his career as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
“The current group of people working at the OTPD are some of the most professional officers I’ve had the pleasure of working with in my career,” he said.
Smart’s Immediate plans for retirement include spending more time with his wife, two children and three grandchildren while he recovers from surgery.
