KITTERY, Maine — A 40-year-old Eliot man was arrested early Saturday morning and charged in connection with a domestic violence incident reported Friday night, according to Kittery police.
Byron Buzzell was charged with one count of aggravated assault, a Class B crime, and one count each of domestic violence terrorizing, obstructing the report of a crime and domestic violence assault, all Class D crimes.
He is being held at the York County Jail.
Officers began looking for Buzzell late Friday when a 55-year-old Kittery woman reported that she had been assault and strangled until she became unconsciousness, Kittery police said. Buzzell had fled the scene when officers arrived.
A search was conducted with the use of a police canine, according to Kittery police, but Buzzell was not immediately located. He was found about 5:30 a.m. Saturday on Goodwin Road in Eliot in the area of Frost Hill Road.
He was arrested without incident by Kittery and Eliot police officers.
The woman was treated at York Hospital for bruises and broken ribs, and later released, police said Saturday.
Police from Rochester and Eliot assisted with the search.
If convicted of the Class B assault charge, Buzzell faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
