WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are investigating a stabbing that sent one man to the hospital on Sunday night, according to Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

Police were called to Gray Street shortly after 11 p.m. after learning of a fight inside an apartment, according to Rumsey, and they encountered several intoxicated individuals.

The deputy chief said that the individuals were agitated and screaming at each other, and one pointed out the victim, who was fleeing the apartment.

Police located the victim, whose name was not disclosed, on nearby Swan Street and found him with a stab wound to his chest, Rumsey said.

The victim was taken to Inland Hospital and then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Rumsey said police believe the altercation began when the 37-year-old victim started arguing with his 48-year-old ex-girlfriend inside the apartment. Rumsey said that it became physical at one point, and some family members and friends got involved.

During the melee, the 37-year-old man was allegedly stabbed by another man, 25, who claimed that he was acting in self-defense. Rumsey said the knife was found in a neighboring vacant lot.

No charges have been filed and nobody has been arrested, but police have determined that the victim was on probation at the time of the incident with the condition that he not have contact with his ex-girlfriend, according to Rumsey.

The investigation is ongoing.
