MAPLETON, Maine — State Police said Monday that burglars targeted several churches in Aroostook County last week, breaking into the houses of worship and making off with an undisclosed amount of items.
State Police Sgt. Josh Haines said in a written statement Monday that the burglaries took place at three churches in northern Aroostook County, sometime between Monday, April 20, and Thursday, April 23.
Haines said Monday that state police were called to investigate break-ins at St. Therese Parish Catholic Church in Stockholm and the Methodist Church in Mapleton. He said local police were investigating the burglary at Bethel Holiness Pentecostal Church.
Haines said Monday afternoon that items inside the churches had been stolen or disturbed, but that he could not release additional details about the burglaries or what was taken due to the ongoing investigation.
Caribou Police Sgt. Paul Vincent said Monday that he also could not release additional details about the burglaries for investigative reasons.
