ROCKLAND, Maine — A Spruce Head man is behind bars after police say he was caught again with drugs while free on bail for a felony bath salts charge.

Herman Hoffman, 40, was arrested Friday at his residence by Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents and charged with felony possession of oxycodone and violating a condition of release.

Hoffman had been arrested in July 2014 for allegedly trafficking in bath salts from his store in Waldoboro. He was arrested again in August for violating his bail by being in possession of bath salts, according to charges filed by the state.

An affidavit filed by the MDEA in the latest case states that drugs were found in a container hidden under the mattress, along with various sex toys. Hoffman denied the drugs were his. He later asked the MDEA if he could avoid jail if he provided information on people who were dealing drugs in the region, according to the affidavit.

Hoffman is scheduled to have a jury-waived trial in Lincoln County Superior Court in June on the original bath salts charge. He has pleaded not guilty.

Hoffman is accused of selling bath salts out of the store he operated in Waldoboro. He had proposed opening an adult novelty store in Rockland last fall but did not follow through. His interest in setting up such a business in Rockland, however, led the City Council to impose restrictions on such businesses.

Hoffman is being held without bail pending a Monday afternoon hearing in Knox County Unified Court.
