BANGOR, Maine — An Exeter man, who in February allegedly used his vehicle to ram his ex-girlfriend’s car, forcing her off the road, then attempted to strangle her until a passer-by stopped to help, was among more than 40 people indicted Wednesday by a Penobscot County grand jury.

Derek Avery, 32, was indicted on charges of domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence assault and criminal mischief, according to the indictment list issued by the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office.

Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid said at the time Avery’s victim told police she and Avery had dated but had broken up and an argument occurred when she returned to his house to collect personal items.

Avery allegedly threatened her and when she left rammed into the back of her car three times between Exeter and Newport, Macdaid said. When he finally forced her off the road while on Moosehead Trail, Avery broke the driver’s side window and began to choke the woman. He fled after a man driving by who stopped to offer assistance but turned himself in after police asked the public to be on the lookout for his vehicle.
