ORONO, Maine — Police went to a local student apartment complex Wednesday afternoon after a large crowd gathered there. One person was arrested in connection with the fracas.

Orono police Sgt. David Silk estimated the gathering involved approximately 200 to 400 people at The Grove apartments near the University of Maine campus.

Tyler Nicoletti, 20, of Orono was arrested by Orono police after he reportedly fell or jumped on a vehicle, damaging the windshield, Silk said. Nicoletti was charged with criminal mischief and refusal to submit to arrest or detention, he said.

A video sent to the Bangor Daily News by a resident from The Grove shows a person can be seen on top of a vehicle before hitting the windshield and then running away.

The number of people at The Grove had been increasing throughout the day when matters got out of control shortly after 4 p.m., prompting Orono police and The Grove security guards to call for reinforcements.

Silk said police officers from Orono, the University of Maine, Old Town, Veazie, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine State Police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency went to The Grove apartments.

The complex has a history of being a location for large parties that involve students. The University of Maine held its annual Maine Day activities Wednesday, which include student service projects, a barbecue and games.
