KENNEBUNK, Maine — The Maine Turnpike rest area in Kennebunk was briefly closed Friday after two suspicious packages were found there.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said the packages turned out to be a pair of backpacks, one containing clothing and the other containing garbage.

The southbound plaza was briefly evacuated but reopened once it was determined there was no threat, McCausland said.

A gas station attendant found the backpack with clothing around 11 a.m. while the other one, filled with garbage, was found in a trash can a couple hours later.

Traffic on the turnpike was not affected.
