Bangor Raceway celebrates opening Kentucky Derby style
BANGOR — Bangor Raceway will celebrate the start of its 132nd season with special Kentucky Derby-style events sponsored by the All Heart Campaign. Fans are encouraged to arrive in Derby-style attire and hats and to take part in numerous family-oriented activities.
A parade kicks off the festivities at 12:30 p.m. and will include a parade featuring horses, an honor guard, a Bangor Fire Department truck, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H group, a clown and two Clydesdales pulling a white limo wagon. Steve Thompson of Lost Trotting Parks, which seeks to educate about standardbred horses and the tradition of racing, will be on hand.
“We’re going to have little ponies and face-painting and a clown. That’s the atmosphere we’re trying to bring back,” said All Heart spokeswoman Laurie MacKenzie.
Admission is free with parking behind the grandstand.
Harness racing scheduled begins at 2:30 p.m. and will be followed by Kentucky Derby coverage starting at 4:30 and the 141st running of the race set for 6:24 p.m.
