MACHIAS, Maine — Three people were indicted on varying charges by the Washington County grand jury Monday.

Nicholas Adam Newell, 25, of Pleasant Point was indicted for eluding an officer, criminal operating under the influence, criminal speed and driving to endanger in connection with a Jan. 23 incident.

“The driver was alleged to be going over 100 mph on some back roads,” Washington County District Attorney Matthew Foster said Wednesday.

The stretch of road included a 90-degree turn and was posted with a speed limit of 45 mph, the prosecutor said.

“Somebody called police and said a vehicle had chased them to a driveway in Pleasant Point,” Foster said. “The vehicle was doing doughnuts in the same area and then headed back on Route 190.”

Once police located Newell’s vehicle, “there was a bit of a chase and finally one of the passengers talked the driver into pulling over,” Foster said.

The prosecutor was unsure how many passengers were in Newell’s vehicle, described as a “small silver car” but said there were at least two.

Officers smelled alcohol on Newell’s breath, Foster said.

Also indicted Monday was Brett McGraw, 45, of Baileyville. He was charged with one count of theft by deception and two counts of unemployment fraud.

“That is a case where the defendant was alleged to have been working while he was collecting unemployment benefits,” Foster said.

The alleged violations took place over a period of about two years, possibly in 2011 and 2012, but Foster was uncertain of the dates.

The Maine Department of Labor conducted the investigation, according to the indictment.

Sherill D. Colford Jr., 56, of Danforth was indicted on possession of sexually explicit materials and dissemination of sexually explicit materials.

The Maine State Police computer crimes unit conducted the investigation starting in 2013, Foster said.
