BRUNSWICK, Maine — A series of crashes involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles on Interstate 295 on Wednesday afternoon was triggered by one vehicle swerving to avoid colliding with another vehicle that cut off the first driver.
No life-threatening injuries were sustained in the crashes, which all occurred in the highway’s southbound lanes near the Freeport town line, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
James Kane, 19, of Brunswick was driving the car that swerved, then overturned, coming to rest on its side off the road.
As traffic began to back up, two other cars collided, then were struck by the tractor-trailer.
All four vehicles were towed from the crash site, according to McCausland.
Traffic at one point was backed up several miles into Topsham.
No additional information was immediately available.
