SMYRNA, Maine — A driver’s failure to stop at a stop sign caused a two-vehicle accident that sent one Aroostook County resident to the hospital Thursday afternoon, according to the Maine State Police.
Allen Whitney, 81, of Island Falls was traveling north on Oakfield-Smyrna Road when he failed to stop at the intersection of Routes 2 and 212, according to Trooper Chuck Michaud.
Whitney’s 2003 Chevrolet Impala struck a westbound 2010 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Philip Shields, 60, of Dyer Brook, who had the right of way and was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Route 2.
Whitney’s car struck the driver’s side of the truck hard enough to almost roll it over, Michaud said.
Whitney was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital as a precaution because of chest pains, Michaud said. Shields refused medical treatment.
Both vehicles were towed.
