WATERBORO, Maine — A man suffering from a mental illness broke into a home on Middle Road on Wednesday morning, according to York County Sheriff William King.

Deputies were called to the residence shortly after 7 a.m. The man had used a large rock to break a sliding glass window to gain entry, King said.

Deputies arrived and found the intruder in a garage, King said. The man was initially arrested but police took him to an area hospital when it was discovered he appeared to be suffering from a mental illness.

The man’s name was not disclosed because he was not charged with a crime.

King said the case remains under investigation.
