HOULTON, Maine — A New York man and a Fort Fairfield resident were charged with drug crimes on Friday after apparently getting lost on the way to Presque Isle and being intercepted at the Houlton U.S. Customs port-of-entry with a substantial amount of crack cocaine and prescription oxycodone.

Kenneth Adams, 30, of the Bronx, New York, and Scott Strid, 30, of Fort Fairfield, were traveling north together on Interstate 95 when they missed their exit to Route 1 in Houlton and ended up at the border crossing between Maine and New Brunswick, according to Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland

Instead of traveling on to Presque Isle, the two men ended up being questioned by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers, McCausland said in a press release issued Monday.

A gram of heroin was found on Strid, who was charged with felony possession of a Schedule W drug, McCausland reported. Strid was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, where he was being held on $500 cash bail.

Adams was found in possession of nearly 200 grams of crack cocaine with a street value of $20,000, along with 160 oxycodone tablets with a street value of $6,500 and 30 grams of powder cocaine with a street value of $3,000, according to McCausland.

Officers also seized $4,500 in cash from Adams, which was suspected to be the proceeds from drug sales. He was charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine base, aggravated trafficking in cocaine HCL, and aggravated trafficking in oxycodone.

All are felony crimes. He also was taken to the Aroostook County Jail, where he remains pending bail in the amount of $25,000 cash.

McCausland did not indicate who was driving the car. Peter Arno, MDEA commander, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday evening.

Agents with the MDEA said that drugs seized from Adams were destined for redistribution in central Aroostook County. The case remains open and further arrests are possible, according to the release.
