SANFORD, Maine — A local man died Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle went off Route 109, according to York County Sheriff William King.

Dakota Thomas, 22, was in a group with two other bikers when he left the road, drove across a lawn, struck a dip in the ground and was thrown off his motorcycle, King said.

Thomas, who was wearing a helmet, landed about 30 feet into the woods, the sheriff said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies are reconstructing the crash, in which excessive speed is believed to be a factor.
