BANGOR, Maine — Mattanawcook Academy tennis standout Meridith Blessard has committed to play tennis at Husson University this fall, head coach Josh Warren announced in a news release Tuesday.

Blessard played two years of varsity tennis at Bucktail High School in Renovo, Pennsylvania, before transferring to Mattanawcook in Lincoln. As a freshman at Bucktail, she only played double matches and didn’t play her first singles match until her sophomore year when she was a second singles player.

After transferring to Mattanawcook her junior year, Blessard was switched to a first singles player and went undefeated (12-0) in the 2014 regular season. She was named the Penobscot Valley Conference and Eastern Maine Class C Girls Player of the Year and was a top 48 state qualifier.

In 2014, Blessard played for the United States Tennis Association team out of Bangor and qualified for districts as a second singles player.

“Meridith has a strong academic and athletic background with high caliber play,” Warren said in the release. “We are excited to bring her on board in building Husson University’s first women’s tennis team.”

Blessard plans to major in nursing.
