Each week the BDN Maine Outdoors team takes a look at different gear you might need for your next outdoor adventure. For this week’s Gear Bag, we looked at the Giant Horizon bike helmet.

What is it? The Giant Horizon bike helmet provides both safety and visibility — things that Peter Richmond, general manager at Ski Rack, recommends for someone looking for a new helmet this season.

Why do I need it? Bike helmets have become almost a standard when riding bikes. They provide riders with added protection to their face, head, and brain in the event of a fall. The Giant Horizon bike helmet does all of these things. With its one size fits most cinch system, riders are able to adjust the helmet for a secure and snug fit. An added bonus is the built-in LED light in the back for extra visibility and safety. The LED can be changed to three settings, slow blink, fast blink or constant, allowing the rider to be seen at night. You could save the money you would put into a bike light by buying this combination helmet.

How much does it cost? The Giant Horizon bike helmet is $54.99. Other helmets range from $35 for adults and go all the way up to $150. Though the helmets don’t get a whole lot safer at the higher prices, they can be lighter in weight and have more vents.

Where do I find it? Giant bike helmets are available at Ski Rack in Bangor.

Capturing sports isn't just about the peak action shot, it's about capturing who these people are and how hard they worked to get where they are. This is what this blog will help show. Not only will...
