ROCKLAND, Maine — A Swanville woman was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in jail after a jury convicted her of theft at the Wal-Mart in Thomaston.

Justice Daniel Billings imposed the sentence on 32-year-old Maranda L. McCafferty in Knox County Unified Court. The sentencing came after a two-day jury trial.

The jury found her guilty of a theft charge. The defense and prosecution had agreed earlier, without the jury being informed, that whatever verdict was reached on the theft charge would result in the same finding for violating a condition of release.

The jury was out for several hours.

The offenses occurred July 3, 2014, when McCafferty was caught by Wal-Mart’s store security stealing clothing. Thomaston police charged her upon their arrival.

McCafferty has had several recent run-ins with law enforcement in Maine. In April 2014, she was charged with operating under the influence and violating a condition of release after she struck a fuel delivery truck in Winterport.

She was also charged in October with drug possession and violating a condition of release.
