UNITY, Maine — A local man died early Wednesday morning while riding his skateboard on the campus of Unity College, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Christopher Garbinski, 23, was not a student at the school, according to McCausland. He and two roommates had been visiting friends on campus and were heading home around 1:30 a.m.

McCausland said the three were skating down Loop Road toward the Quaker Hill Road intersection and were traveling too fast to make a left-hand turn onto Quaker Hill Road.

Garbinski crossed Quaker Hill Road and crashed into several birch trees, while the two others — Sylvanus Egerton, 27, and Luke Munster, 24, both of Unity — suffered minor injuries after crashing in the same area.

Garbinski’s roommates rendered first aid immediately after the crash before paramedics could arrive, McCausland said.

Garbinski was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.

Bob Mentzinger, spokesman for the college, said Wednesday the skateboarders were not Unity students.

“All of us at Unity College offer our deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased,” Mentzinger said in a prepared statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to them at this difficult time. We are assisting Maine State Police in their investigation.”

Graduation at Unity was held May 9, he added.
