SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A local man is facing a gross sexual assault charge after allegedly assaulting a resident of the Trinity Shelter, according to police.
Mark Johnson, 36, who lists his address at the shelter, was scheduled to appear in court later Wednesday, according to Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais.
Late Monday night, police were alerted to the situation and met the victim at the hospital, according to Blais, and detectives were called in after learning of the severity of the situation.
The chief added the alleged assault happened at some point Monday night, and Johnson was arrested on Tuesday and brought to Somerset County Jail.
Blais is encouraging anybody in a situation like this to seek immediate help.
“Anybody who has been involved in an awful situation like this should go to the emergency room,” he said. “There are specially trained folks there that can help.”
Johnson remained in county lockup Wednesday morning.
