BOWDOINHAM, Maine — State police are searching for a kayak that was swooped off the side of Interstate 295 on Tuesday afternoon, according to spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Around 4:30 p.m., a woman was driving south when her vehicle’s roof rack became loose, causing the 14-foot Heritage Featherlite kayak to fall off, McCausland said.

The kayak was dragged off the road and placed behind a guardrail to be picked up later. But a half-hour later, the woman returned to find the kayak and roof rack gone, McCausland said.

Anyone who was traveling I-295 late Tuesday and may have seen somebody loading a yellow kayak into a vehicle or knows where the boat is should call state police in Augusta at 624-7076.
