BOWDOINHAM, Maine — A kayak that disappeared along Interstate 295 has been returned to its owner, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Ted Talbot, spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, reported seeing the kayak being loaded into a SUV on Tuesday afternoon, McCausland said.

That information led to a man from the Portland area calling in to report he had picked the boat up.

The kayak was returned to its owner Thursday morning, and it had been hidden behind a guardrail after it became loose from the owner’s vehicle.

McCausland said the man who found it took it to his residence to keep it safe and notified police after seeing media reports that troopers were looking for the kayak.
