Youth chorale auditions

BANGOR — Bangor Area Children’s Choir Youth Chorale  for those age 12 through 18 and Treble Choir for children age 9 and up are auditioning new members for the 2015-16 school year. In addition to its regular winter and spring concerts, BACC will perform “The Nutcracker” and “La Bohème” with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. the choruses also plan a performance tour to St. John, New Brunswick.

Prospective new members may attend a “try-It” rehearsal at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bangor or they may contact the artistic director to arrange an individual audition.

‘James and the Giant Peach’

BANGOR — Penobscot Theatre Company’s Dramatic Academy will present “James and the Giant Peach,” a dramatized version of Roald Dahl’s story, at 6 p.m. May 29-30, and 3 p.m. May 31, at the Bangor Opera House.

The story opens with hapless orphan James living quietly and quite miserably with his despicable Aunt Spiker and his horrible Aunt Sponge. When he receives a magical gift from a mysterious stranger, the adventure begins. Audiences will travel along with James as he befriends fantastical creatures, flies a giant piece of fruit across a treacherous ocean and lands atop the Empire State Building.

Cast members of “James and the Giant Peach” are Kobe Angel, Andrew Barrett, Lauren Bilancia, Sophia Bilodeau, Thea Bowden, Katelynn Bowker, Ian Buck, Elisabeth Budd, Kaitlyn Carreira, Brianna Demaso, Ian Eskesen, Rebekah Friedman, Connemara Geaghan, Kai Grosjean, Meghan Harriman, Maia Johnson, Brooke Jones, Conor Laferriere, Nathan Manaker, Sophia Merchan, Sophia Mullins, Noam Osher, Zivi Osher, Rachel Palmer, Rebeclyn Parker, Laura Pribus, Joseph Rutledge, Lana Sabbagh, Chloe Sarnacki, Lilie Sites, Raven Sockalexis, Claire Thompson, Emma Tzovarras and Laurel Whidden.

“James and the Giant Peach” is directed by Penobscot Theatre Company resident teaching artist and company member Benjamin Layman.

Music camp scholarship

BREWER — New Renaissance Singers has established a student scholarship fund to help foster and grow a love of music and singing. In the last few years, it has donated scholarships to Bangor Area Children’s Choir. This year, a senior camp scholarship to the Maine Summer Youth Music at the University of Maine is being offered.

Applicants must be Bangor area students eligible for senior camp as of spring 2015. The student’s specific area of interest should be vocal-choral music. To apply for the scholarship, students must send the following to New Renaissance Singers:

  • A completed Maine Summer Youth Music application.
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher or vocal instructor.
  • A short essay of approximately 500 words describing the student’s musical experience and how attending music camp will impact his or her plans for the future.

Send the application, letter, and essay to: New Renaissance Singers, Attn: Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 3544, Brewer, ME 04412.

Application deadline is Monday, June 1. A decision will be made and the student notified by June 5.  Maine Summer Youth Music will be notified of the applicant’s acceptance and scholarship, and the information and payment will be sent to MSYM directly.
