CAMDEN, Maine — Improper disposal of smoking materials led to a fire that damaged a John Street home Thursday afternoon, according to the town fire chief.

The chief said the investigation, assisted by the state fire marshal’s office, found smoking material was improperly disposed of on the deck of the house. The fire then spread inside the home. Windy conditions also blew embers and started three fires on the lawn.

Fire damaged the kitchen of the home owned by Mary Amory, and smoke damaged much of the remainder of the home.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported shortly after 2 p.m.

Crews from Rockport, Lincolnville and Hope responded to assist Camden firefighters.
