ROCKLAND, Maine — Rockland firefighters were able Monday evening to put out a fire that damaged a city home.
The department responded shortly after 6:30 p.m. to 6 Camden Street Terrace. According to the Rockland Fire Department, the tenant at the home owned by Goldie Richards started cooking on the stove with vegetable oil in the pan. The tenant reportedly left the house to pick up something at the adjacent Hannaford supermarket.
Shortly after, other occupants in the home spotted the fire on the stove and ran over to the neighbor’s house to ask that the fire department be called. The tenant returned at the same time and used a fire extinguisher to try to put out the fire, which had spread to the cabinet above the stove.
Firefighters arrived and found the fire was still in the cabinet and had started spreading into the wall. The crew had to cut into the wall and ceiling to put out the fire.
Fire damage was limited to the stove and cabinets, but there was moderate smoke damage to the first and second floors of the home.
