PORTLAND, Maine — Friends and family of shooting victim Trey Arsenault gathered at a basketball court in Westbrook on Tuesday evening to hold a vigil in memory of the teen.
Arsenault, 19, was a popular student and a star athlete at Westbrook High School before graduating last year.
“Being here at one of his favorite places is something we need to do,” said Luch Bol, a friend of the victim.
“He was a really good kid,” said another friend, Jacorey Monterio.
Those who knew Arsenault gathered to light candles, write messages on the court and support each other as they thought about him.
“Great to see everyone out here mourning and celebrating his life,” said friend Matt Dickson.
Friends shared their happy memories of the victim.
“He was energetic, fun guy to be around, always had your back when you needed him,” said Bol.
“He was a real go-getter kind of kid, real upbeat,” said Dickson.
The victim’s friends, who worked to remain positive, said they want punishment, not revenge.
“Justice will be served and it’s gonna be the right way,” said Bol.
Until then, friends and family will lean on each other for support.
“I feel like it’s just gonna leave a hole in a lot of people’s hearts around here,” said Dickson.
School officials have said counseling is available for students in need.
