SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard and other officials are working Wednesday to clean oily water that discharged into the Piscataqua River on Tuesday, according to a Coast Guard statement.

The discharge originated from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship Ferdinand R. Hassler, and the source was secured on Tuesday, according to the statement. No wildlife has been affected, and no onshore pollution has been found.

The Coast Guard is working with the NOAA and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

The cause of the spill is under investigation, and while the exact amount spilled has not been confirmed, the maximum capacity of the affected tank was 750 gallons, but it was partially filled before the spill.
