AUGUSTA, Maine — A semi truck making a U-turn in the middle of the Calumet Bridge on Route 3 caused two other vehicles to crash into each other early Thursday, police said.

The truck was traveling west on Route 3 when it made the U-turn at the end of the median strip, heading back east toward Riverside Drive, Augusta police Sgt. Christian Behr said.

The truck, which had no trailer attached to it, apparently caused a red Buick sedan to swerve to avoid it as it made the U-turn, causing a pickup truck to crash into the Buick, according to Behr. The semi did not strike any vehicles and left the area.

No injuries were reported, but the truck’s driver, David Walter, 71, of Readfield was summoned for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, according to Behr.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m.
