Zach Quintal, a pitcher-third baseman for Marshwood High School of South Berwick, has been named the 2014-15 Gatorade Maine Baseball Player of the Year.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

Quintal, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of Maine beginning this fall, was batting .414 for the Hawks while compiling a 4-1 pitching record with a 0.75 earned run average this spring at the time of his selection.

Marshwood, which advanced to the 2014 Western Maine Class A championship game, is 10-3 and ranked fourth in Western A this year.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Quintal is a two-time Southwestern Maine Activities Association all-star and was named to the USA Today’s American Family Insurance ALL-USA Maine second team last spring.

Quintal has maintained a B average in the classroom. A mentor for elementary school students, he has volunteered locally on behalf of youth sports programs.

“Quintal isn’t only a gifted baseball player, but he plays the game the right way,” said Windham High School coach Brody Artes. “He always seems to find a way to get on base and put pressure on his opponents.”

Quintal joins recent Gatorade Maine Baseball Players of the Year Ben Greenberg of Scarborough (2013-14 and 2012-13), Luke Fernandes of Marshwood (2011-12), Scott Heath of Westbrook (2010–11), Matt Verrier of Oxford Hills of South Paris (2009-10), Chris Bernard of Scarborough (2008–09), Kyle Stilphen of Gardiner (2007-08) and Jarrett Lukas of Old Town (2006-07).
